Original art by Lisa on a 9×12″ canvas

Art is an enrichment activity offered to our residents. Some chimps enjoy it, while others prefer not to. The choice is theirs to make.

About the Artists

My name is Lisa and I was born at The Coulston Foundation (TCF), delivered by C-section, and was immediately taken from my mother, Nova, to be raised in the nursery by humans. My records indicate that my health was not good for the first year of my life, often suffering from fever and diarrhea. Despite this, when I was approximately 18 months old, I was used in a biomedical research study. For the next 16 weeks, I was injected with ketamine at least 22 times to anesthetize me for blood draws and throat cultures. My records do not indicate that I was used in any subsequent research studies.

In 2002, I was rescued by Save the Chimps when TCF closed its doors, and I am now a member of a growing chimpanzee family. Art is an enrichment activity offered to those of us who are interested. I am an enthusiastic painter, using both a brush and my tongue, and I talk to myself and clap my hands as I paint. Although Save the Chimps most often provides the chimps with non-toxic acrylics for their masterpieces, I have also shown a preference for pastels (aka sidewalk chalk).
