About the Artist

I was born on January 1, 2007, to parents Sherry and Thomas at a facility in Texas. Sherry was an attentive mother and nurturing to me. Sadly, she became very ill shortly after I was born and passed away, leaving me an orphan. Another young chimp born at the facility, Dylan, found himself in a similar situation. Save the Chimps was contacted to assist, and soon both of us moved to Save the Chimps’ former site in New Mexico, where we were cared for around the clock by a staff member with extensive experience raising infant chimpanzees.

A year later, we were ready to transition to a chimpanzee family. We met Roxy, a sweet old lady who immediately embraced the role of mother to us. Our little family was rounded out by Janice, a young girl who enthusiastically took on the role of big sister, and Abdul, an older male who kept us in line. Our little family migrated to Florida in June 2010, where we began introductions to a larger chimpanzee group. I was especially close to Roxy, who sadly passed away in 2013. We met Tammy, a quirky chimp who fell in love with us. My relationship with Tammy continues many years later, and it’s not uncommon for the two of us to be so busy playing we don’t notice it’s time for meals until the last minute.

I can often be spotted on top of the telephone poles located on my island, gazing out across the sanctuary. The telephone poles are one of many climbing structures on the island, and I make good use of them. From this vantage point, I can check out my island and the activities of neighboring islands as well. I am a happy, friendly chimp and am one of the first to greet care staff when they enter my building.

My name is a combination of two adult males (Marty and Waylon) who left behind amazing legacies at Save the Chimps. I’m currently working out what my own legacy will be, and as I enter my teenage years, I’m busy pushing boundaries like most boys my age do. But I still have the heart of a little boy and sometimes find myself starting trouble in the group that I don’t really know how to finish. Other family members often redirect me and remind me of the rules of chimp society, an important part of living in a group. I have an amazing future ahead of me, surrounded by a loving chimpanzee family and endless opportunities to grow.
